Unless of course ..............!!!!!!!! ——— Bobby Fischer: Black and white magic — He was the chess genius who electrified the planet – until his life unravelled spectacularly. Can a new film explain Bobby Fischer? Bobby Fischer was the blessing and the curse of chess in the 20th century. The American electrified the game when he rose to prominence in the 1950s and 60s, and won the world chess championship in a thrilling match against Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in 1972. But then, increasingly unhinged, he refused to defend his title in 1975, wandered the world for the next 30 years, and in 2008 died in Iceland – the scene of his 1972 triumph and, by the end, more or less the only country that would give him sanctuary. His absence from the chess stage was ...

Message: PRISON CHESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I wonder if a new book will be forthcoming, a' la Fischer's re: the Pasadena incident. Remember Gary, on your first day in the joint make sure to challenge and beat the biggest, baddest inmate in a game of chess. Otherwise, you'll be somebody's patzer - and no amount of opening preparation will do you much good. Good luck champ:)
tag1153 ——— Chess: An early pawn advance — White has just advanced the g-pawn. Is this early pawn storm justified? How should Black react? RB: Early pawn advances by my opponent tend to make me sneer. But too often the sneer has been wiped off my face when I continue with routine developing moves, only to find a few turns later that the unchallenged pawns are causing mayhem. So, let's take White's threats here seriously and consider what would happen if we played something like 1…Nc6 (or 1…Na6…?). Is the advance of the g-pawn anything to worry about? After 2 g5 Nfd7, White doesn't have anything like an attack but he is cramping the black kingside and ...

-> www.lenta.ru ——— Bobby Fischer: Chess's beguiling, eccentric genius — Three years after his death, interest in chess genius Bobby Fischer shows no sign of waning, with a new documentary film about to have its UK premiere. So what is it about the controversial and eccentric chess star that fascinates, asks David Edmonds, co-author of Bobby Fischer Goes To War. It's difficult, now, to imagine the excitement generated by the 1972 world chess title match in Iceland between the Russian chess champion, Boris Spassky, and the American challenger, Bobby Fischer. There were other big stories jostling for newspaper column inches at the time. It was the beginning of the Watergate scandal that would eventually compel President Nixon to resign. Henry Kissinger was ...

Message: he's picked an awfully tough battle to fight.

I was reading one of the hyperlinks, present in the article cairo links to, which was the April 13,2007 edition of "MSN Money" ...
There it cites Kasparov's greivance against Putinism to be that it made a false democracy; one in which a large part of the country's wealth is controlled by a small elite group that is kept in office. (Boy that sounds familiar~! Isn't that the same as in ... um, everywhere?! :)

It's my understanding Kasparov has been politically active & vocal for some years now. Apologies to Garry if I am wrong on this; but I think it was he who gave an interview somewhat critical of Mr. Gorbachov during his tenure as leader of the Soviet Union; saying that the Western world saw Mr. G as being more magnanimous & inherently liberal, as a leader, than the Soviet population did; and that many of the reforms during that time were brought about by public pressure upon the government moreso than being from any intrinsic desire to change being held by the leadership of the time.
I wish I could recall now where the interview appeared. I do know his outspokeness
has not been limited to appearing only in Chess related publications, of "The West"

Of course, most of us are probably aware that Kasparov once started an association for GM's/professional Chess players, to rival F.I.D.E. ; and take over the World Championship cycle and match... Which led to a divided crown, with both organizations crowning their own World Champions.
***
So his present political crusade is not the first time Garry has focused himself & his keen intellegence and political savvy upon matters at hand and taken an outspoken stand. Personally, I do not know enough about Russia or the former Soviet Union to have any fair judgement as to the validity of his criticisms over the years nor the significance of those he currently holds ... but hopefully this will not be the last time he is able to voice his views and seek the reforms he espouses. As one of the articles from cairo 's link says ... the protesters are in a precarious position wherein their health, jobs and other essentials cannot be taken for granted
.
While Garry surely has little concern for his own job security ... there are always the matters of health, freedom and family to bear in mind. I hope our former WC has not "bitten off more than he can chew", as the saying goes.
——— Chess, Jazz and Hockey Legends in Prague — The world chess champion Vishy Anand visited Prague in mid-June shortly before Czech president Vaclav Klaus celebrated his 70th birthday with a jazz concert at the Prague castle. Chess was always close to the president's heart and nobody was surprised when he showed up at Anand's simultaneous exhibition to see the world chess champion in action. CHESS. Vishy Anand. The Czech capital has a special meaning for Anand. In 2002 he won the Eurotel knockout chess tournament, the strongest rapid event in the history of chess. Anand defeated Anatoly Karpov in the final and finished ahead of such exceptional chess players as Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov and Veselin Topalov. At ...

Cairo ——— On Chess: Game's finest scary to stockbrokers — In the 1990s, Wall Street banks hired several top chess players to trade equities. Among them were former U.S. Open champion Norman Weinstein and a Russian emigre, former Soviet women's champ Anna Akhsharumova. Weinstein's success as a trader at Bankers Trust spurred the institution to recruit other top chess players. In the January issue of New in Chess, Harvard professor Ken Rogoff - formerly a chief economist for the World Bank and a chess grandmaster - explained: "Being a trader certainly requires iron nerves, as chess does, and also the ability to concentrate for very long periods." I'm reminded of an analogous campaign by Rand Corp. In 1960, at the dawn of ...
