Subject: Novice Nook # 65

Message:
A gray, cold day in Denver. Time for a Novice Nook article. The title is "Is it Safe?" and is a series of examples for novices and intermediate players on captures and counting. Most of the examples can be read without setting up the board and are worth the time spent.

Like many of you, I'm sure, I feel Heisman is repeating himself at times, but I'm not put off by this. It is, after all, not a column for experts and there's only so much basic chess info to go around. I think he does a good job of keeping things pretty fresh.

The link is:

And here is a hyperlink to the Chess Cafe main-page of Index showing a number of other Authors and Articles that looked very interesting to me, as well. Such as Dvoretsky RE: Training(!); & another RE: "How to Become An Internet Chess Master" by R.T. Touhey; And "Susan Polgar On Chess", Etc.
Please feel free to shop and browse there too, IF you are good and eat your vegetables; so See Novice Nook #65 first~! }8-D

I have added on these two hyper-items because the Novice Nook 65 seemed to me it was extra hard to find this month; for me to find at least. So apologies to those more technically proficient who are perhaps muttering now, 'What's he on about?! It's a piece of cyber-cake to find ... is this a April-Fools' Joke ?!'
[Answer to that is "NO" ! ~ I like to save my April Fools' Jokes for another time, so they REALLY FOOL some folks in mass quantities, if possible. ...I've been considering Primary Day as my Target for this year ...

Chess: The calculations of Vishy Anand — The Indian grandmaster is back on top of the world – and matches such as this demonstrate why. Over the next few weeks we are going to be looking at games by the world chess champion Vishy Anand. He recently regained the no 1 spot on the rating list, so this seems a fitting moment to feature his play. His depth and speed of calculation marked him out as a special talent in his youth, and he has lost none of that sharpness in his maturity. RB: What is the white knight doing on g5? This was the first thing to strike me when Dan sent me this position. Has it just captured a piece? Has it been trapped? Has there been a whole series of ...
